Mandatory category features

M01

Inverter with grid and system protection (NA-Schutz) per VDE-AR-N 4105; AC feed-in power of at most 800 W or permanently limitable to 800 W

M02

CE marking, incl. radio equipment compliance (RED 2014/53/EU) for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth inverters or storage units

M03

Ready-to-connect complete kit: panels, inverter and connection cable with a household plug (Schuko or Wieland) included

Expected features by price class

P01

Budget

  • Combined panel power of at least approx. 800 Wp (typically 2 panels of approx. 400-450 Wp each)
  • Inverter up to 800 W with Wi-Fi and app monitoring (real-time power and yield history; e.g. Growatt, Hoymiles, TSUN, Deye)
  • Connection cable with plug in a practical length (approx. 3-5 m) included
  • Approx. 25-year performance warranty on the panels (at least approx. 80% remaining output)
P02

Mid-range

  • Bifacial glass-glass panels with approx. 860-1,000 Wp combined
  • Suitable mounting kit included (balcony railing, wall or ground stand selectable)
  • Inverter with 2 MPPT trackers (panels optimised independently of each other)
  • App shows per-panel power plus daily, monthly and yearly yields
  • Product warranty on the inverter of at least approx. 10 years
P03

Upper mid-range

  • LiFePO4 storage with approx. 1.5-2 kWh capacity included in the kit
  • Storage modularly expandable (to at least approx. 4-5 kWh)
  • Connection of up to 4 panels / approx. 2,000 Wp panel power possible
  • App with energy flow view and adjustable feed-in power
  • Storage suitable for outdoor use (approx. IP65 rating)
P04

Premium

  • Storage from approx. 2.5 kWh in the kit, expandable to approx. 10 kWh or more
  • Integration of dynamic electricity tariffs (e.g. Tibber, aWATTar) with forecast- or price-driven charging plans
  • Bidirectional grid charging of the storage (use cheap low-price hours)
  • Demand-based feed-in / zero feed-in via smart meter or measuring device coupling (e.g. Shelly)
  • Approx. 10-year warranty on the storage unit
04

Above-class bonus features

  • Equipment clearly above class expectation (e.g. storage below EUR 600, bifacial panels plus mounting in the budget class, 4 MPPT in the mid class)+4
  • Local control without forced cloud (official Home Assistant/MQTT integration, local API or OpenDTU support)+4
  • App data optionally on EU servers with documented GDPR compliance+3
  • Inverter, connection/extension cables and — for kits with storage — battery modules individually available from EU retailers (the inverter is statistically the most failure-prone part)+3
  • Backup power function (outlet on the storage unit / off-grid mode during blackouts)+3
  • Storage with self-heating for charging below approx. 0 °C (winter operation)+3
  • Performance warranty of approx. 30 years or more on the panels+2
  • Structurally certified mounting with wind load verification (DE: also suitable for mounting heights above 4 m)+2
  • Registration service or guided German MaStR registration included (registration data of the kit fully prepared)+2
  • Optionally available with Wieland feed-in socket or fixed-connection kit+2
  • Panels with high efficiency of approx. 23% or more (e.g. N-type/TOPCon)+2
05

Negative characteristics

  • Documented inverter compliance defects (e.g. missing grid protection relay, withdrawn or forged certificates)-8
  • Documented incident: severe cloud security flaw (e.g. heise/CCC report, CVE entry) or manufacturer-triggered remote shutdown or throttling at end customers without local fallback control-5
  • Subscription required for core functions (e.g. yield history, tariff optimisation only for a fee)-5
  • Monitoring app not usable from the EU: not listed in EU app stores, no German or English interface, or registration only possible with a Chinese phone number-4
  • Repeatedly documented severe app defects (connection drops, server outages, data loss)-4
  • Proprietary panel/connection plugs instead of MC4 standard, accessories only overpriced from the manufacturer-3
