European price classes

P01

Budget

€0–€250

P02

Mid-range

€250–€600

P03

Upper mid-range

€600–€1200

P04

Premium

€1200–€2500

P05

Ultra-premium

€2500+

The lowest documented European price selects the class. Within ±10% of a boundary, both neighbouring classes are calculated and the better result counts.

02

Mandatory category features

M01

CE marking incl. Radio Equipment Directive (RED) compliance for Wi-Fi/Bluetooth modules

M02

Published light-source safety information: for laser light sources the stated consumer laser class 1 (EN 60825-1/EN 50689), for LED/lamp light sources a warning against looking directly into the lens

M03

At least one HDMI input for external sources (streaming stick, console, laptop)

M04

Transparent core specs: native resolution and brightness in ANSI/ISO lumens in the datasheet — or a published brightness measurement from an independent test (fantasy lumen/lux marketing figures do not count)

M05

Menu/OS and manual in German or English, EU power plug; where an account is required, EU registration possible

03

Expected features by price class

P01

Budget

  • Native full-HD resolution (1080p, not a mere 720p panel)
  • Built-in streaming OS (Android/Google TV or similar) with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
  • Autofocus and automatic keystone correction
  • Brightness at least approx. 250 ANSI/ISO lumens (honestly specified)
P02

Mid-range

  • Licensed smart OS (e.g. Google TV) with official Netflix app and Widevine L1 (HD streaming)
  • Brightness at least approx. 400 ANSI/ISO lumens
  • Advanced auto setup: at least two automatic functions beyond autofocus and auto keystone (e.g. obstacle avoidance, screen fit, eye-protection dimming)
  • Decent built-in audio from approx. 2×5 W, usually with Dolby Audio decoding
P03

Upper mid-range

  • Maintenance-free laser, hybrid or LED light source rated approx. 20,000 h or more (no replaceable lamp)
  • Brightness at least approx. 1,000 ANSI/ISO lumens
  • HDR playback (at least HDR10/HLG)
  • Fully licensed streaming platform incl. Netflix (Google TV or similar)
  • Powerful built-in audio from approx. 2×10 W (often branded sound such as Dolby/Harman) or a digital audio output (HDMI eARC/optical) for an external system
P04

Premium

  • 4K UHD display (native or pixel shift)
  • Brightness at least approx. 2,000 ANSI/ISO lumens
  • Laser or laser/LED hybrid light source
  • Advanced HDR: Dolby Vision and/or HDR10+
  • Optical zoom or lens shift per datasheet; alternatively a lossless digital image-size adjustment
P05

Ultra-premium

  • 4K image with high light output approx. 2,000+ ANSI/ISO lumens
  • Pure laser light source (approx. 20,000–30,000 h)
  • Advanced HDR with dynamic tone mapping: Dolby Vision, HDR10+ or a proprietary dynamic HDR tone mapping (e.g. Frame Adapt HDR, XR Dynamic Tone Mapping)
  • Flexible installation: ultra-short-throw optics (laser TV) or lens shift/large optical zoom
  • Wide colour gamut coverage approx. 90%+ DCI-P3 per manufacturer or published reviews (e.g. triple laser)
04

Above-class bonus features

  • Image tech clearly above class expectation (e.g. 4K, laser light source or Dolby Vision in budget/mid/upper class)+5
  • Built-in battery for approx. 2 h+ video playback (true portable use)+3
  • Integrated gimbal/rotating stand with automatic image adaptation+2
  • Optical zoom or lens shift below class expectation (budget to upper class)+3
  • Gaming mode with low input lag approx. ≤20 ms and/or 120 Hz++3
  • Quiet operation: fan noise below approx. 28 dB(A) per manufacturer+3
  • Manufacturer's brightness figure essentially confirmed by a published independent measurement (deviation below approx. 15%)+3
  • At least two HDMI inputs, one of them with ARC/eARC for a soundbar or AV receiver+2
  • Usable without account/cloud lock-in: HDMI basic operation and core functions without registration+2
  • USB-C PD power input (power-bank operation on the go)+2
  • Outdoor-ready: splash protection (e.g. approx. IPX2/IPX3) and carry handle+2
  • Spare parts/accessories sold separately in EU retail (remote, power supply, lamp/dust filter where applicable) or an EU repair service with a spare-parts commitment+3
05

Negative characteristics

  • Smart projector without Netflix licence/Widevine L1: major streaming apps only in SD or not working at all (documented)-4
  • Brightness advertised only in fantasy 'lumens'/'lux', tested at a fraction of the claim (documented)-5
  • Core functions only usable after mandatory registration or app pairing: HDMI playback not possible without an account (documented in the manual, setup flow or reviews)-4
  • Fan repeatedly documented as disturbingly loud (clearly above approx. 35 dB(A) in normal mode)-3
  • OS without updates/maintenance: key apps documented to stop working or app store abandoned-4
