Frequently Asked Questions

DOC / FAQPublic information

Is the European Best Value Award an official or EU award?

No. The European Product Evaluation Institute is a private, independent, commercial assessment service operated by smartzone GmbH in Germany. It is not a public authority, not part of the European Union and holds no governmental accreditation.

Who operates the European Product Evaluation Institute?

EPEI is a service of smartzone GmbH, Faltermaierweg 7, 84524 Neuötting, Germany (commercial register: Amtsgericht Traunstein, HRB 35330). Full details are in the Imprint.

What is a category benchmark?

Each assessable category has a versioned benchmark with price classes, mandatory gates, class-median expected features, additional-value features and negative features. The benchmark is calibrated to the documented market median rather than to a hand-picked competitor set. Broad classification categories without an active benchmark cannot currently receive an award.

How is the score calculated?

Methodology 2026.07 starts at 70 points. Each missing or unverified expected feature costs six points. Evidenced additional-value features can add up to 15 points; documented negative features, warranty and the verified price position make the remaining adjustments. The rule engine applies the published formula deterministically and limits the result to 0–100. A product qualifies at 70 points, provided every gate passes.

What happens if evidence is missing?

Only documented claims count. Each scored feature needs a source URL and excerpt. Unverified expected features are treated as missing; if identity, EU price or another assessment gate cannot be confirmed, the result is “not assessable” rather than a guess.

Does paying guarantee an award?

No. The assessment itself is free of charge and its outcome is open — products can and do fail. The only fee is the optional licence fee, available only after a passed assessment if the manufacturer chooses to use the seal. Payment never influences the assessment result.

Can I verify an award?

Yes. Every published award has a permanent verification page reached through its award ID and the QR code supplied with the seal. It shows the product, score, methodology and benchmark versions, assessment date and current status.
